BOGNOR REGIS

Home is where the hat lies

In 1936 Billy Butlin created the most recognised holiday company in the UK - Butlins. The first Resort opened in Skegness introducing the famous Redcoats. Butlins offers guests entertainment, great facilities and an atmosphere to have fun and relax with family and friends.

Bognor Regis is a small West Sussex seaside town on the south coast of England. It is 69 miles south west of London. It began as a small fishing village and the town still has its fishermen, operating small inshore boats from the towns beaches. A very pleasant coastal town with many sites of historical interest nearby. The development of modern Bognor was began in the 1780s by Sir Richard Hotham. Hotham park is named after this pioneer. Throughout the summer Bognor is host to many popular annual events such as the Birdman Rally, the Sands of Time seaside festival and the Bognor Live music festival. Visit the Bognor Regis Museum of Local History, run by the Local History Society. The Bognor seaside train runs along the promenade to Butlins.

The ice house dates from circa 1792 and is in a remarkable state of preservation. It is a tribute to the skill of the men who built it. It is about 28ft deep from the dome to the floor below ground level, and the diameter of the chamber is approx. 12ft. The circular exterior wall is of fine brickwork and the dome is cemented on the inside. The exterior is thickened by an extra skin of brick and flint and for further insulation a mound of earth has been built around it and planted with trees to provide shade. Floors in many ice houses tended to be made of pebbles to facilitate drainage.
